Okay. Holy moly.

I’ve spent a good part of the past week reading your answers to the Wine + Data Support Group survey that so many of you filled out last Friday. Let me share three very top-line responses that struck me most strongly.

(Right after the holy moly, that is.)

  1. There are a lot more people doing this work than I thought. I am grateful to you for taking the time to share your thoughts, and add your perspective to the mix.

  2. There is a whole spectrum of information here. Even better, there’s a whole spectrum of people at every phase of the wine + data process, from really (really) cool and sophisticated projects all the way to owners taking on the burden of having to figure out “this data thing” for themselves. Please know that I’ve heard you. Each of you. I’ve read what you’ve written and I’ve been reaching out to you one by one. It’s taking a while, so please be patient if I haven’t contacted you directly just yet.

  3. There is no shortage of talent available to (and within) the industry right now to truly move the needle on using data analysis for the benefit of wine business. There is also no shortage of data itself. I’m convinced of that now more than ever.

So there’s that.

I heard frustrations from you too.

Two big ones? Frustrations from data people about finding opportunities where they can have an impact, and frustrations about companies who don’t comply with requests for data in a timely or accurate manner.

There’s quite a lot of work to be done, as those two frustrations begin to articulate. Now we know a lot more about the capabilities and the people who are already doing the work that’s having an impact.

I look forward very much, with the help of those of you who have offered, to figure out the best ways to broaden the reach and the application of data analysis to benefit wine business.

Please stay tuned for updates. We’ll be away next week for the long holiday weekend, and back here on Friday, July 10.

Thank you for your input and thank you, as always, for reading —

Cathy
